Hormone Gremlins

Hormones are your body's chemical messengers. They travel in your bloodstream to tissues or organs. They work slowly, over time, and affect many different processes, including:

    Growth and development

    Metabolism - how your body gets energy from the foods you eat

    Sexual function

    Reproduction

    Mood

Hormones and Diet

There are two major hormone players in controlling hunger and appetite.

Ghrelin is known as the hunger hormone. Ghrelin increases food intake and increases fat mass. Ghrelin also activates the reward link, a circuit that communicates the hedonic and reinforcing aspects of natural rewards, such as food, as well as of addictive drugs, such as ethanol.

The hormone Leptin acts to inhibit appetite. Leptin has traditionally been regarded as a link between fat mass, food intake, and energy expenditure, however recent studies have indicated a more complex role for Leptin, and discovered how Leptin resistance caused by obesity can develop. This Leptin resistance is similar to the Insulin resistance associated with type 2 diabetes, and means that where Leptin resistance occurs, appetite may remain uninhibited and a constant desire to eat may be experienced.

What Upsets Ghrelin and Leptin

Studies have shown that one of the primary causes of disturbed Ghrelin and Leptin levels is poor sleep. This is usually not enough sleep. Sleep deprivation creates a double whammy of increased Ghrelin and reduced Leptin, sending the hormonal message that you are hungry and you want to eat. See Sleep

Stress has also been shown to adversely affect Ghrelin and Leptin levels. Tests on mice in induced stress environments, show how the effects can last for weeks after the stress incident. This give some explanation as to why bullied people often comfort eat and gain weight.
