Sleep

Too much or too little of anything tends to be bad for us. It is no different with sleep.

If we are sleeping too much then we are inactive, so staying in bed asleep too long reduces the number of hours of activity in any one day. So if we do not reduce our calorie intake to match the lower levels of activity then we will gain weight.

Too little sleep causes physical and mental stress, including poor concentration and irrational thinking.

To compensate most people tend to snack and use high sugar foods and high fat foods as a ‘fast fix’ for their lack energy and ability to concentrate.

The carbohydrate rush makes them feel better, gives them energy and helps them concentrate but does not satisfy their hunger.

To satisfy their hunger, rather than eat proper food, they consume more high sugar and fat foods until their hunger is satisfied.

Our body is happy that there is an excess of calorie and stores them as fat in case we ever need them. Unfortunately we rarely need the stored fat, but the body will keep on adding to the fat store ...... just in case!

Short sleep time also affects leptin and ghrelin hormones. Test results from a study of people getting 4 hours per night or less often showed significantly lower leptin levels and higher ghrelin levels in the blood plasma.

Low leptin and high ghrelin can give powerful dual signals that the body has an energy deficit, thus creating a urgent desire to increase food intake. It’s a double whammy hormone hit that makes you want to eat more. The brain is getting signals that the body is starving, so you crave food.

Ghrelin is also associated with the formation of visceral fatty tissue, located in the abdominal zone and considered to be the most harmful fat and is believed to be a significant cause of metabolic syndrome - which includes; diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
